If any NBA analyst thinks they should dislike the Boston Celtics' 2024 NBA offseason, you probably don't understand the reasoning behind such a view. The Celtics just won their league-record 18th championship and are returning nearly every player who made it happen. What's not to like?
Full disclosure — that analyst was Grant Hughes of Bleacher Report, and to be fair, Hughes had a hard time coming up with anything in his survey of the National Association of Professional Baseball teams about why they dislike the offseason. That said, Hughes has a point, especially given rumors that registration fees may be part of the reason Wyck Grousbeck and his family are selling off their shares in the storied franchise.
“The contract extensions with (Jason) Tatum, (Derrick) White and (Sam) Hauser are worth approximately $500 million in total,” Hughes wrote.
“Add to that the in-season contract extension of Jrue Holiday and the max extension they signed with Finals MVP Jaylen Brown prior to last year, and the Celtics are surging to spending levels the league has never seen before,” the B/R analyst added. “At some point, this operation is going to become cost-prohibitive.”
“It's a concern for the future. Boston is paying market price for the best players in the league. I can't even pretend to dislike that. But they needed something to fill this space.” But if the recent financial rumors are true, that future may arrive sooner than expected. Let's hope this race ends with more titles and no broken hearts.
