The Dallas Cowboys haven't had many wins in 2024, and if that trend continues, there could be serious repercussions. Mike McCarthy and his staff have struggled all season, and things could change dramatically if the team can't turn their early-season poor luck into a back story and perform well over the remainder of the schedule.
But the reality is that right now, the Cowboys have one of the 10 worst records in the NFL, and because of that, they're in position to land a top-10 draft pick after Monday night's doubleheader.
If this season ends, Dallas would draft ninth overall.
There are 14 teams with a 1-2 record. Tiebreakers in the NFL Draft are determined by reverse strength of schedule. Teams with an easier schedule are considered “worse” and are favored in the first round draft order.
For each subsequent round, teams with equal records are swapped. The team with the easiest schedule has first priority, and for the second round, they are moved to the end of the tied team queue. For each subsequent round, the conveyor belt moves.
Currently, Indianapolis, New England, Cleveland, Miami, Carolina, Dallas, Chicago, New York, Baltimore, Denver, the Los Angeles Rams, Arizona and San Francisco are all in the same No. 1 and No. 2 spot. Head-to-head is meaningless.
Of course, the content rotates every week, with football on nearly every night of the week, three nights a week, and the compensation picks change too.
The Cowboys will lose five eligible free agents during the 2024 free agency period and will compete for up to four of the 32 additional picks available to teams each year. Compensation amounts will vary slightly based on playing time and postseason awards. For now, here's a look at the 10 total rounds the Cowboys will have in the draft.
