SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) – A thrill-seeker who calls Sioux Falls home is setting off on the climb of a lifetime.
Ask Gavin Bell about the single most life-changing moment he'll remember and he'll tell you it was an adrenaline-fueled moment that pushed him to new limits.
Bell's thirst for adventure began during military-style boot camp.
“It's going to challenge you in ways you can't even imagine,” Bell said.
Next, he auditioned for a dangerous living travel group and is now a part of it.
“You can explore the world with them,” Bell said.
My trip to Africa created some wonderful memories.
“A giraffe ran right by me. I went there with 10 strangers and left with 10 new friends,” Bell said.
Now he is packing his bags again.
“I'm going to Mount Everest,” Bell said.
The training also included hiking in Colorado, but not as extensive as hiking Everest Base Camp.
“It's 17,600 feet above sea level. So, yeah, it takes about 10 days to get there. You'll be hiking up and down to get acclimated to the climate until you get to base camp,” Bell said.
Most of his training is done at home with each workout lasting six to eight hours.
“Typically, I'll pack 25 to 30 pounds in a backpack and do different exercises like push-ups and squats every few minutes while I'm walking,” Bell said.
Bell said it's those moments of awe that broaden his perspective on life.
“Everyone should step out of their comfort zone at least once and try something they don't think they can do,” Bell said.
I asked him what it was like when he finished his quest and returned home.
“Usually by the time we land we're already starting to plan our next trip,” Bell said.
Bell plans to next climb Mount Kilimanjaro or kayak in Indonesia to see the Komodo dragons, and will give details of his Everest expedition when he returns home next month.
