El Abd is a close friend of England manager Steve Borthwick and the pair were former roommates at Bath University.
Former England assistant coach Paul Gustard and Stormers coach Norman Laker are also known to be in the running for the job.
El Abd is due to join the England training camp at the end of October but as things stand Jones will remain part of the coaching staff, at least in the short term.
Jones is currently serving his 12-month notice period following his resignation and will be in demand after winning consecutive World Cups with South Africa, but his contract will not be bought out by any future employers.
Meanwhile, Kevin Sinfield is on the verge of agreeing a new contract with the Rugby Football Union which will see him remain in the coaching staff on a reduced basis.
