Former NBA MVP guard Derrick Rose has been waived by the Memphis Grizzlies, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic.
Rose, a 15-year NBA veteran, played in 24 games for the Grizzlies in the 2023-24 season, averaging 8 points, 3.3 assists and 1.9 rebounds per game. According to ESPN reports, Rose was released by the Grizzlies at his own request with one season remaining on his two-year, $6.6 million contract.
According to New York Post reporter Stephen Bondy, the 35-year-old Rose had been considering retiring from the NBA in 2023 before signing with Memphis, the same city where he played college basketball at the University of Memphis.
The three-time NBA All-Star was the first overall pick by the Chicago Bulls in the 2008 NBA Draft. He was named NBA Rookie of the Year in the 2008-09 season, was selected to his first All-Star team in his second year and was named NBA MVP in his third year in 2010-11.
After eight seasons in Chicago, the latter part of which was plagued by injuries, Rose went on to play seven seasons with the New York Knicks, Cleveland Cavaliers, Minnesota Timberwolves, Detroit Pistons and most recently the Grizzlies.
