It wouldn't be surprising if the San Francisco 49ers were aggressive about strengthening their defensive line at the NFL trade deadline.
They clearly need help along the front, and there are some attractive names floating around in the pre-deadline rumor mill. But ESPN's Dan Graziano doesn't expect the 49ers to land one of the big fish available at that spot. Instead, he is proposing the less exciting idea of San Francisco acquiring defensive tackle Davon Godchaux from the New England Patriots.
This isn't to say Godchaux isn't a good player. He is. The 29-year-old has been in the NFL since being drafted by the Miami Dolphins in the fifth round of the 2017 draft.
He never made the Pro Bowl and had only 5.5 sacks with 94 pressures in 111 games (100 starts). However, he is a capable run defender and will give the 49ers rotation depth alongside Maliek Collins, Jordan Elliott, Kevin Givens, and Khalia Davis.
On the other hand, another rotational defensive tackle didn't see much movement for the 49ers.
They need more pass rush support and ideally would move on to a player with 3rd down impact. San Francisco is looking to win the Super Bowl, and while help from the defensive tackles would be great, they probably won't do much unless they cause havoc for opposing quarterbacks.
Even if the 49ers are making a play to add Godchaux, it shouldn't be their only move if they're looking to execute a trade that dramatically increases their chances of winning.
