The NBA season is fast approaching, with media days coming up soon and teams holding training camps afterwards. For the Brooklyn Nets, the start of the new season officially marks the start of a new era as they welcome an entirely new roster.
The Nets are in a full rebuild after trying to compete with what was left of them in the Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant trades, so they'll have a lot to work with on the court as they start to thin their roster.
The Nets began gutting their depth by trading Mikal Bridges, a mainstay of last season's team, to the New York Knicks, and with more depth changes on the horizon, on paper the Nets will be one of the weakest teams in the league.
Heading into the season, the over/under for Brooklyn to win this season is 19.5 wins, according to ESPN BET, so speculation is likely to increase as the season draws closer.
At face value, securing 20 wins seems easy. But it's not that easy. Brooklyn could secure a true franchise talent in the 2025 NBA Draft, as the next class has a chance to change the team's trajectory.
The Nets want to finish in the bottom three in the NBA to maximize their chances of winning the first overall pick in the draft lottery. Last season, the bottom two teams in the NBA (and Eastern Conference) finished with 14 and 15 wins, respectively.
To sink to the bottom of the league, the Nets may not even want to win more than 20 games, even if that were possible, and they're essentially starting from scratch after failing to acquire a franchise star or young star talent while trading away players whose sole focus was to win now.
Brooklyn is undergoing a much-needed franchise reset, so don't expect them to top 20 wins.
