PORT, Ark. — Over 80 minutes on Monday in less-than-ideal conditions, two Class D powerhouses played out one of the closest games imaginable.
The Wolves of Port Canaseraga, Ark., came on the attack right away in the first half, but Fillmore’s defense, led by some dynamic play between the baskets from Brayden Hennard, stood the test of time.
As a result, no goals were scored during the 80 minutes of fierce combat.
The match between the two teams went into overtime, but once the extra time began, it didn't take long for Arcport Canaseraga to once again crack the Eagles' defensive code.
Kohler Preston was the codebreaker as the Wolves converted their 18th and final shot on the Eagles defense just two minutes into the first overtime period to end the game with a spectacular 1-0 shutout victory over the defending Class D champions on Monday night at the Melody J. Harwood Soccer Complex in Arkport.
“They came out full force, winning multiple 50-50 balls in the middle of the field. Despite our sluggishness, Henard and our defense were able to keep the ball out of the net for the first 40 minutes,” Eagles coach Jarrett Vosburg said. “I was pleased with how we responded in the second half, but we just couldn't find the breakthrough. A series of defensive mistakes and some great play by Arcport Canaseraga down the left wing led to their goal. Kudos to them for playing physical, tenacious and getting the job done.”
Preston's goal came on a glorious trail down the sideline and into the Fillmore zone just 2 minutes, 24 seconds into overtime, when he put the ball beyond doubt on the field and gave the Wolves the win. That lone goal was part of a slew of 18 shots on the Eagles (3-1-2), giving the Wolves an 18-4 overall advantage in that department.
Despite limited shots against the Timberwolves, Fillmore continued to apply pressure to create chances using any means possible, especially in the second half.
But the Eagles never had a chance to score, as they kept the ball safe behind a powerful defense led by goaltender Brayden Hennard, who put in a stellar performance with 17 impressive saves.
The win for the Wolves came courtesy of a shutout from Taylor Pragle, who stopped all four shots he received on goal.
Fillmore will look to regroup and retool for their next fight in quick form as they take on Bolivar Richburg at home tonight at 7 p.m.

Women's Soccer
Addison 3, Wellsville 1
ADDISON — The Addison Lady Knights scored a first-half goal 10 minutes into the game and also converted a crucial penalty kick late in the game. The Wellsville Lady Lions were able to cut the lead in half before halftime, but the hosts, clad in maroon uniforms, hung in there until the end to edge out their opponents, 3-1, on Monday.
Addison kicked off the celebrations with the brightest spark about 10 minutes later from a kick from midfield, before Adrian Easton's goal in the 32nd minute set the tone.
The lead held until the Lady Knights opened up a significant lead on a penalty kick with 11:36 left in the first half, when Caitlin Crooker scored a shot inside the deep end of the Wellsville goal to double the lead.
The Lady Lions (3-4) answered back with that goal and quickly answered just over a minute later, when Maeve Turner took a pass from Raegan Vogel and scored to revert the deficit with 10:09 to play.
It was the only goal the white and orange clad visitors scored in the final 50 minutes of the match, with Addison adding a final goal from Chloe Snow midway through the game to seal the win.
The win in front of goal came thanks to Addison's Skylar Hall who saved seven of the eight shots she faced. On the other end of the pitch, the Lady Lions' Lydia Kay also saved seven shots.
Wellsville returns home Wednesday night to host Genesee Valley/Belfast in a 7 p.m. game.
Fillmore 1, Arkport Canaseraga 0
ARKPORT — The old saying goes, “Better late than never.”
The doubleheader matchup at the Melody J. Harwood Soccer Complex in Ark. featured an epic showdown between the two boys teams, followed by a dynamic girls match. As with the boys' match, there were plenty of chances and plenty of scoring chances, but for the majority of the time, no combinations found the back of the net.
But late in the second half, on a routine play with the ball in the offensive zone, the Lady Eagles were presented with the biggest opportunity possible to break the flow: a penalty kick.
Morgyn Ross elected to kick and without a moment's hesitation scored the goal, helping the Lady Eagles break a game-long scoreless period and secure their sixth straight win in the defense of their Class D title with a 1-0 shutout victory over host Arkport Canaseraga on Monday.
“Tonight was one of those nights where we didn't play very cleanly. Arkport Canaseraga gave it their all the way through the game and so did we,” Lady Eagles coach John Beardsley said. “Matty McMiskey was a bright spot for us defensively and now we need to turn hard work into smarter work. Monday nights are never easy and the quality of play was obviously lacking but effort was not lacking. Tenley (Miller) took the ball hard into the corner to earn a penalty and was tripped, but Morgin stayed calm and took a strong shot.”
The Lady Eagles' (6-0) winning moment came with just under 10 minutes left in regulation, when a Lady Wolves player took a tumble in the penalty box deep in the Arkport Canaseraga zone, stopping the clock for a head-on penalty kick.
Ross took the kick and scored without a doubt, ultimately giving Fillmore a one-point lead.
The Lady Eagles’ lone goal came on nine shots against the Lady Wolves, narrowly outscoring their opponents, 9-8.
Goalkeeper Grace Clark stopped all eight of her opponents' shots to help her team secure a shutout victory, while on the other end of the pitch Maddie Kellogg also stopped eight shots for the home team.
Next, Fillmore returns to its hometown to host Bolivar Richburg on Wednesday in a 7 p.m. game.
Andover/Whitesville 5, Jasper-Troupsburg 0
ANDOVER — Five different scorers helped Andover/Whiteville brave the damp conditions on the field that lasted all day to shut out the Lady Wildcats of Andover's Jasper Troupsburg, 5-0, in a fantastic home game on Monday.
Of 16 total shots taken against Jasper Troupsburg, five found the back of the net, two of which gave Andover/Whiteville (2-5) a 2-0 lead going into halftime. The scoring started near the midpoint of the game when Stella Bledsoe took advantage of a strong pass from Brynna Gaylord.
With just seconds left in the game, Reece Phelps took a pass from Reece Winters and scored to put the score in front of the visitors.
The momentum continued in the second half as Andover/Whiteville added three more points as McKenna Vance, Naudia Pearson and Brynna Gaylord each scored to secure the win.
Phelps and Bledsoe each assisted on the team's final two goals in the final 11 minutes of the game.
Goalkeeper Olivia Waters held down the fort, stopping all six shots by Jasper Troupsberg to earn the win without conceding a goal, while at the other end Annabelle VanNorman saved 11 shots for the visitors.
Andover/Whitesville will get back on track on Wednesday, traveling over the hill to Whitesville to host Friendship/Sio in a 5 p.m. game.
